The course Buddhist Thought has been taught at the University of Otago for over seventeen years as the result of an MoU between the University and the 60th Dhammachai Education Foundation (the 60th DEF) & Dhammachai International Research Institute (�ϰ��ϲʹ��). The chairman of institutes, Phramaha Sudham Suratano (PhD, 9th grade of Pali Studies) will award scholarships to students who obtain the highest mark on the course in every year.

On 26 September 2024, Dr Woramat Malasart, a lecturer in a course on Buddhist philosophy “Buddhist Thought” (RELS 227/327) at the University of Otago invited Phra Suthep Thippasiriko, an abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya Wellington, to share his knowledge on Buddhist mindfulness and meditation both from theoretical and practical perspectives. Around twenty students have enrolled for the course both on campus and by distance. The students really enjoyed learning from an experienced monk, and they learned a great deal, particularly on how they can integrate the practice of mindfulness and meditation into their daily life.

รายวิชา “พุทธธรรม” ได้ถูกสอนที่มหาวิทยาลัยโอทาโก้มายาวนาน เป็นระยะเวลากว่า 17 ปี ซึ่งเป็นดอกผลจากการลงนามความร่วมมือทางวิชาการ(MoU) ระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัยโอทาโก้ กับมูลนิธิ 60 ปีธรรมชัยเพื่อการศึกษา เเละสถาบันวิจัยนานาชาติธรรมชัย(�ϰ��ϲʹ��) ประเทศนิวซีเเลนด์ โดย พระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ป.ธ.9, ดร. ประธานอำนวยการสถาบัน ได้มีการมอบทุนการศึกษาให้กับนักศึกษาที่ทำคะแนนได้สูงสุดในรายวิชาทุกปี

วันพฤหัสบดี ที่ 26 กันยายน 2567 ดร.วรเมธ มลาศาสตร์, อาจารย์ผู้สอนรายวิชาพุทธปรัชญา “พุทธธรรม” (RELS 227/327) มหาวิทยาลัยโอทาโก้ ประเทศนิวซีเเลนด์ ได้นิมนต์พระอาจารย์สุเทพ ทิพฺพสิริโก เจ้าอาวาสวัดพระธรรมกายเวลลิงตัน มาร่วมแบ่งปันความรู้ เรื่องการเจริญสติและการทำสมาธิในพระพุทธศาสนา ในมุมมองทางทฤษฎีและการปฏิบัติ ในรายวิชานี้มีนักศึกษาชาวต่างชาติประมาณ 20 คนที่ลงทะเบียนเรียน(รวมนักศึกษาที่ลงทะเบียนเรียนในระบบทางไกลด้วย) บรรยากาศในห้องเรียนเต็มไปด้วยความสนุกสนาน ทั้งนี้นักศึกษาได้เรียนรู้จากพระอาจารย์ผู้มากประสบการณ์ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการผสมผสานการฝึกสติและการทำสมาธิเข้ากับชีวิตประจำวัน

The President of Dhammachai International Research Institute (�ϰ��ϲʹ��) of New Zealand and team visit Xi Lai Temple and the University of the West

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Phra Maha Sutham Suratano, Pali IX, Dr., Assistant Abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, Vice President of the Union of Thai Sanghas in Oceania (UTO), President of the Dhammachai International Research Institute (�ϰ��ϲʹ��) of New Zealand, and Abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya Auckland, New Zealand, along with monks from Wat Phra Dhammakaya California, visited Venerable Hui Dong, Abbot of Xi Lai Temple. Xi Lai Temple is the largest branch of Fo Guang Shan in Taiwan and the most significant Mahayana Buddhist temple in America and Europe. Since 1994, Fo Guang Shan and Wat Phra Dhammakaya have shared a close “sister temples” relationship, fostering annual visits and joint merit-making activities.

During this visit, there were in-depth discussions on Buddhist teachings. Dr. Phra Maha Sutham expressed gratitude to Venerable Hui Dong for the historical support provided by Xi Lai Temple, especially during the early days of Wat Phra Dhammakaya’s propagation in the United States, starting at Wat Buddha Maywood.

Venerable Hui Dong recounted that Venerable Master Hsing Yun faced numerous challenges when he first came to America, with limited Buddhist followers and resistance from other religious groups, making the propagation of Buddhist teachings difficult. Master Hsing Yun’s legacy of assisting new Buddhist temples remains a guiding principle for his disciples.

Dr. Phra Maha Sutham praised Venerable Master Hsing Yun as a model for Buddhist work and a revered teacher, emphasizing his profound teaching on the “Philosophy of Being Second,” which highlights humility and service. Master Hsing Yun believed that one should support and elevate others rather than seek personal prominence, focusing on altruism, compassion, and the collective good. Venerable Hui Dong elaborated that Master Hsing Yun preferred supporting others over seeking prominence.

This meeting strengthened the relationship between the temples, signaling a future of collaborative efforts in Buddhist education and scripture translation. After exchanging souvenirs, Venerable Hui Dong and Venerable Hui Zhi guided a temple tour, sharing insights into its construction. The visit was marked by a joyous atmosphere and mutual respect.

Following this, Dr. Phra Maha Sutham visited Dr. Minh-Hoa Ta, President of the University of the West, founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. They discussed educational development and cooperation in translating ancient scriptures, accompanied by Dr. Shakya, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, and Dr. Shou-Jen Kuo, Associate Professor and International Coordinator. The tour included campus facilities, and Dr. Phra Maha Sutham presented a Dhamma book as a token of appreciation for their warm welcome.

เข้าเยี่ยมคารวะ พระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง (Venerable Hui Dong) เจ้าอาวาสวัดซีไหล ซึ่งเป็นวัดสาขาใหญ่ที่สุดของฝอกวงซาน (ไต้หวัน) ถือเป็นวัดนิกายมหายานที่ใหญ่ที่สุดของอเมริกาและยุโรป และวัดฝอกวงซาน (ไต้หวัน) ถือเป็นวัดพี่วัดน้องกับวัดพระธรรมกาย ประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ปีพุทธศักราช 2537 ทำให้วัดซีไหล และวัดพระธรรมกายแคลิฟอร์เนีย มีความสัมพันธ์ที่ดีต่อกันเหมือนเป็นวัดพี่วัดน้อง มีการทำบุญและแวะเวียนเยี่ยมเยือนกันในทุกปี

โดยครั้งนี้ได้มีการพูดคุยสนทนาธรรมซึ่งกันและกัน และพระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ได้กล่าวขอบคุณกับพระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง ที่ในอดีตที่ผ่านมาทางวัดซีไหลได้ให้การสนับสนุนช่วยเหลือ โดยเฉพาะในยุคแรกที่วัดพระธรรมกายเข้ามาเผยแผ่ในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ยุควัดพุทธเมย์วูด ซึ่งเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของทุกวัดศูนย์สาขาในอเมริกา และวัดฝอกวงซานให้การช่วยเหลือสาขาของวัดพระธรรมกายในประเทศไต้หวันด้วย

พระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง ได้กล่าวว่า ท่านพระธรรมาจารย์ซิงหวินต้าซือ ตอนที่มาอเมริกาท่านลำบากมาก คนเชื่อในพระศาสนามีไม่เยอะ ต่างศาสนิกกีดกัน ทำให้การเผยแผ่คำสอนเป็นไปได้ยาก จึงทำให้ท่านอยากจะช่วยเหลือทุกวัดที่เป็นศาสนาเดียวกัน ความตั้งใจนี้ ท่านได้ถ่ายทอดกับลูกศิษย์ทุกคนว่า ถ้ามีชาวพุทธมาเปิดวัดใหม่ ให้ช่วยเหลือเขาเสมอ

ซึ่งพระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ได้กล่าวว่า ท่านพระธรรมาจารย์ซิงหวินต้าซือนั้น เป็นต้นแบบเป็นตัวอย่างในการทำงาน และเป็นเสมือนอาจารย์ที่ท่าน และเหล่ากัยาณมิตรวัดพระธรรมกายทั่วโลกต่างเคารพรักท่านมาก คำสอนของท่านที่กล่าวไว้ตอนหนึ่งว่า “ไม่เป็นนายใหญ่ แต่เป็นนายรอง” นั่นดีและลึกซึ้งมาก ๆ ซึ่งพระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง กล่าวขยายความว่า ท่านพระธรรมาจารย์ซิงหวินต้าซือเป็นคนชอบช่วยเหลือคนอื่น ไม่ห่วงตนเอง ทำงานเผยแผ่ตลอด ท่านขอเป็นที่สอง ไม่ขอเป็นที่หนึ่ง

การพบปะกันครั้งนี้ ถือเป็นการเชื่อมสัมพันธไมตรีที่สร้างความแน่นแฟ้นมากขึ้น และเป็นนิมิตหมายที่ดี โดยทั้ง 2 ท่าน ได้พูดถึงในอนาคตที่จะได้ทำงานพระพุทธศาสนาร่วมงานกันมากยิ่งขึ้น เช่น การทำงานการศึกษา การแปลพระคัมภีร์ต่าง ๆ เป็นต้น

และหลังจากที่ได้มอบของที่ระลึกซึ่งกันและกัน พระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง และพระอาจารย์หุ้ยจือ ได้พานำชมวัดและให้ข้อมูลสำคัญของการสร้างวัดในส่วนต่าง ๆ ด้วย นับเป็นช่วงเวลาและบรรยากาศที่เต็มไปด้วยรอยยิ้มและความปลื้มปีติที่ได้มาเจอกัน

หลังจากนี้พระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ยังได้เดินทางไปพบปะกับ ดร.มิน โฮ ทา (Dr.Minh- Hoa-Ta) อธิการบดี University of the West ซึ่งเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่พระธรรมาจารย์ซิงหวินต้าซือ เป็นผู้ก่อตั้ง พร้อมทั้งมีคณาจารย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านต่าง ๆ คือ รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ศากยะ (Dr.Shakya) สาขาวิชาศาสนาศึกษา และ รองศาตราจารย์ ดร.โชว-เจน กัว (Shou-Jen Kuo) หัวหน้าผู้ประสานงานระหว่างประเทศ ซึ่งได้พูดคุยหารือแนวทางการพัฒนาการศึกษา และความร่วมมือในการแปลคัมภีร์โบราณต่าง ๆ อีกด้วย พร้อมกันนี้ยังได้นำชมสถานที่ศึกษาตามอาคารต่าง ๆ ได้ถ่ายรูปและมอบของที่ระลึกให้คณะสงฆ์ที่เดินทางไปพบหารือ ซึ่งพระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ได้มอบหนังสือธรรมะไว้ให้ที่มหาวิทยาลัย พร้อมทั้งกล่าวขอบคุณที่ให้การต้อนรับเป็นอย่างดี

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, 12:00 -12:30 PM, local time, Kittipong Vongagsorn, a Ph.D. student from Dhammachai International Research Institute of New Zealand (�ϰ��ϲʹ��) who is currently studying at , presented his research titled “Moggallāna Lost in Another World-System: The Enduring Influence of Mahāyāna in a Thai-Lao Legend” at the “Theravāda and East Asia” conference. The event took place in the Lecture Theatre of Weston Library, Broad Street, at the

Kittipong’s research delves into the Thai-Lao legend where Moggallāna, one of the Buddha’s chief disciples, ventures into another world-system and encounters another Buddha. This legend highlights the enduring influence of Mahāyāna Buddhism in the region. It shows how Mahāyāna Buddhism was integrated and accepted into the predominantly Theravāda Buddhist cultures of Thailand and Laos. The story not only reflects religious beliefs but also intertwines with the local culture and history of the communities.

The seminar was a collaborative effort between the University of Oxford and the Yin-Cheng Network for Buddhist Studies, a Taiwanese religious organization renowned for its global network in Buddhist education and partnerships with leading universities. The event was a significant success, attracting a large audience of Buddhist scholars and enthusiasts who were keen to explore the intersection of Mahāyāna and Theravāda traditions in Southeast Asia.

Oxford, June 20, 2024 – In a significant development, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with This pioneering partnership is dedicated to advancing research into ancient meditation practices within Theravada Buddhism.

This collaboration comes as �ϰ��ϲʹ�� celebrates the 80th anniversary of its founder. The notable academic partnership with aims to delve into and document the historical meditation techniques of Theravada Buddhism, providing fresh insights into these ancient practices.

The signing ceremony, held at Oxford University, was attended by Phra Maha Sutham Suratano, Pali IX, Dr., President of �ϰ��ϲʹ�� (NZ), and Assistant Abbot of Dhammakaya Temple, who signed on behalf of �ϰ��ϲʹ��. Professor Kate Crosby, a distinguished authority on Theravada Buddhism, represented the University of Oxford.

Phra Maha Sutham Suratano remarked on the partnership’s significance, stating, “This collaboration marks a crucial milestone in promoting the research and application of ancient meditation practices. It is an invaluable opportunity for both institutions to exchange knowledge and research expertise, deepening our understanding of Theravada Buddhism and expanding the dissemination of our findings to benefit society locally and globally.”

June 12, 2024 – Dr. Phra Maha Sutham Suratano, (Pali 9), the President of , Director of the Phrapariyattidhamma School, Vice President of The Union of Thai Sanghas in Oceania, and Assistant Abbot of the Dhammakaya Temple, visited the executive committee of He was warmly welcomed by Professor Richard Gombrich, founder of OCBS, and his colleagues.

The Dhammachai International Research Institute and the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies have maintained a decade-long academic cooperation agreement (MoU), established during the tenure of the late Most Venerable Phrasudhammayanavidesa (Sudham Sudhammo), former president of �ϰ��ϲʹ��. This MoU focuses on the collaboration and support for teaching the Pali language to interested individuals worldwide and providing academic lectures to the public.

This partnership has significantly contributed to the dissemination of knowledge and understanding of the Pali language and Buddhism among Westerners and interested individuals globally.

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. , Chulalongkorn University recently hosted a doctoral dissertation seminar for doctoral students of Pali-Sanskrit language and Buddhist Studies major in the second semester of the 2023 academic year. This venue of seminar was the room 502, South Asian Languages section, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University.

In this regard, Dr. Supranee Panitchayapong, a scholar from the Dhammachai International Research Institute (�ϰ��ϲʹ��), known for her profound knowledge, expertise, and experience in editing Pāli Buddhist texts, graciously served as the lecturer for the seminar “An Edition of the Pāli Buddhist Texts.”

The audiences of seminar were fifteen Ph.D. and master degree students including an advisor. Nine of students were “Phra Maha” most of whom passed the 9^th level of Pāli Studies whereas other students were three females and three males. According to three hours lecture, it was not only successful lecture but also quite enjoyable as the participants, all of whom possessed a strong foundation and a keen interest in the subject matter, actively engaged in discussions and provided thoughtful responses throughout the session. This collaborative and enlightening experience allowed everyone to both enjoy themselves and expand their knowledge. The lecturer was able to clearly answer every question that was raised. The seminar marked a significant step forward in the ongoing exploration and understanding of Pali scriptures within the academic community.

ในงานนี้ ดร. สุปราณี พณิชยพงศ์ นักวิชาการสังกัดสถาบันวิจัยนานาชาติธรรมชัย (�ϰ��ϲʹ��) ประเทศนิวซีแลนด์ ซึ่งเป็นผู้มีความรู้ ความชำนาญ และประสบการณ์ด้านการตรวจชำระคัมภีร์ทางพุทธศาสนา ได้ให้เกียรติมาเป็นวิทยากรบรรยาย หัวข้อ “การตรวจชำระคัมภีร์บาลี”

โดยในงานนี้มีนิสิตปริญญาเอก และปริญญาโทเข้าร่วมฟัง ๑๕ ท่าน เป็นพระมหาเปรียญ ๙ รูป ป.ธ. ๙ เกือบทั้งหมด และมีนิสิตชาย ๓ ท่าน นิสิตหญิง ๓ ท่าน อาจารย์ที่ปรึกษา ๑ ท่าน การบรรยาย ๓ ชั่วโมงสำเร็จลุล่วงไปด้วยดี ผู้เข้าร่วมงานทุกท่านได้รับความรู้และความบันเทิงจากการสัมมนาในครั้งนี้ เนื่องจากทุกท่านมีพื้นฐานในหัวข้อที่บรรยายและมีความสนใจไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน มีปฏิสัมพันธ์ ซักถามและโต้ตอบดีมากตลอดการบรรยาย ผู้บรรยายสามารถไขข้อข้องใจที่ได้ชัดเจนในทุกประเด็นที่มีผู้ตั้งคำถาม ความสำเร็จของงานสัมมนาครั้งนี้ จึงนับว่าเป็นการสืบสานพัฒนางานด้านองค์ความรู้การตรวจชำระคัมภีร์บาลีให้มีความก้าวหน้าในวงวิชาการต่อไป

On April 1^st , 2024, Ms Charmaree Tangkasikit, a scholarship doctoral student of Dhammachai International Research Institute (�ϰ��ϲʹ��) presented her work in the international conference “Theravada Buddhism and Social Engagement” which was held at Hyatt Centric Hotel, Uttarakhand, India.

The opening ceremony was graced by Ram Nath Kovind, the 14^th president of India, and Gen. Gurmit Singh, the Governor of Uttarakhand. Furthermore, the international community of Theravada monks which led by Dr. Lag Mahanayaka Mahathera, and the president of World Theravada Buddhist Centre, Dr. MK Otani, along with scholars from eleven countries participated this seminar in unison.

As the event featured numerous presentations and discussions related to the intersection of social and academic aspects in Buddhism, Ms. Charmaree who is currently working on dissertation at , India, presented in the topic,”Mindfulness Practices and Social Engagement: Exploring the Connection in Thai Theravada Buddhism.” This research explored the connection between mindfulness practice and five daily virtues as cleanliness, collocation, politeness, punctuality, and meditation through clear examples of positive transformations.

ในงานนี้มีการนำเสนอและเสวนามากมายที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการผสมผสานระหว่างแง่มุมทางสังคมและวิชาการในพุทธศาสนา นางสาวจามรีซึ่งกำลังทำวิทยานิพนธ์ที่มหาวิทยาลัยสุพารตี ประเทศอินเดีย ได้นำเสนอหัวข้อ “การฝึกสติและการมีส่วนร่วมทางสังคม: การสำรวจความเชื่อมโยง ในพุทธศาสนานิกายเถรวาทของไทย” โดยงานวิจัยนี้ได้สะท้อนความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างการฝึกเจริญสติในชีวิตประจำวันด้วยความดีสากล 5 ประการ ซึ่งประกอบไปด้วยความสะอาด การจัดระเบียบ ความสุภาพ การตรงต่อเวลา และการทำสมาธิ โดยหยิบยกตัวอย่างที่แสดงให้เห็นอย่างชัดเจนเกี่ยวกับการเปลี่ยนแปลงเชิงบวกจากผู้ปฏิบัติในพุทธศาสนานิกายเถรวาทของไทย

The Annual Award Presentation Ceremony : Support Buddhist studies and teaching Buddhism

On Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 3:30 p.m., New Zealand time, Phramaha Sutham Suratano, Pali IX, Dr, chairman of the Dhammachai International Research Institute of New Zealand (�ϰ��ϲʹ��) provided annual scholarships to the University of Otago students who got excellent scores in each subject related to Buddhist studies and provided annual financial support for teaching Buddhism to the Religion Programme, School of Social Sciences, University of Otago. The Dhammachai International Research Institute of New Zealand and Australia (�ϰ��ϲʹ��) and the 60th Dhammachai Education Foundation of New Zealand and Australia have been in academic cooperation with the Religion Programme, University of Otago, New Zealand, for 16 years.

The Prize Presentation Ceremony was organised by Professor Will Sweetman, Head of the School of Social Sciences at the University of Otago, staff members in the Religion Programme, and �ϰ��ϲʹ�� staff. Also, Professor Tony Ballantyne, Deputy Vice-Chancellor External Engagement at the University of Otago kindly joined the event and was a representative to receive annual funding for teaching Buddhism. He made grateful remarks and said that the scholarships that �ϰ��ϲʹ�� and the 60th Dhammachai Education Foundation of New Zealand and Australia have provided over a decade have created educational opportunities for many students at the University of Otago.

Under the MoU between the Dhammachai International Research Institute (�ϰ��ϲʹ��) and the Religion Programme, the University of Otago, we are pleased to invite everyone to join the Buddhist Texts seminar series between 19-23 February 2024, 2-5 pm (NZ time). ��

This seminar series examines 20th century Buddhist texts and biography to show how major and minor Cambodian Buddhist figures negotiated a path in relation to Buddhist Reform movements, Independence, the Cold War, and the social-political aftermath of the Pol Pot period. The talks focus on the relationship between Cambodian Buddhism and that of its neighbours, in particular India and Sri Lanka.

Phra Akbordin Paññāratano, a PhD candidate ring the historical bell

On January 25, 2024, Phra Akbordin Paññāratano, a PhD candidate in Religious Studies at the University of Otago, and a researcher at the Dhammachai International Research Institute of New Zealand (�ϰ��ϲʹ��), rang the University bell and took pictures with his supervisors and friends after submitting his PhD thesis in early January. The University of Otago initiated the tradition of ringing the University bell in March 2019 by inviting doctoral students to ring the historical bell after submitting their theses.
